Occupational Health – Technician Recruitment

Successfully filling two Occupational Health Technician roles for a long-standing manufacturing client, overcoming travel requirements and passive candidate challenges through targeted headhunting.

The Challenge

Our client, a long-standing manufacturing client whom we have partnered with for over 8 years, required the appointment of two Occupational Health Technicians to support a wide-ranging portfolio of workplace health services. The roles were particularly challenging to recruit due to the extensive travel requirements across multiple client sites nationwide.

Although the organisation had an established in-house recruitment team, their own efforts to attract suitable candidates had been unsuccessful. Key barriers included:

  • A limited pool of technicians with the flexibility and willingness to cover multiple locations
  • Strong competition from companies offering localised, fixed-site roles
  • The need for candidates with both technical competency and a strong customer-facing approach
  • Low engagement from passive candidates who were not actively applying through conventional channels

The client required a targeted and relationship-led recruitment strategy to identify high-quality candidates who could thrive in a mobile, multi-site environment.

Our Approach

  • Long-Term Partnership Insight: Leveraged over 8 years of working closely with the client, giving us a deep understanding of their culture, service model, and expectations for technician performance.
  • Role Definition & Market Insight: Worked with OH Lead to refine the brief, ensuring clarity on travel patterns, location coverage, and essential technical skills.
  • Candidate Relationship Network: Drew on long-term relationships with technicians and wider occupational health professionals, engaging individuals who were not actively seeking new roles but open to the right opportunity.
  • Headhunting & Targeted Search: Conducted discreet outreach to technicians working at competitor organisations, prioritising those with proven experience in mobile service delivery.
  • Quality Screening: Carried out rigorous sifting to assess technical competence, professionalism, adaptability, and the capacity to manage multi-site schedules effectively.
  • Support Through Process: Guided candidates through each stage, providing clarity around expectations and supporting the client with interviews, feedback, and offer management.

The Outcome

Both Occupational Health Technician roles were successfully filled within the 4 week required timeframe. Each candidate was identified through a combination of targeted headhunting and long-standing professional relationships, rather than traditional advertising routes.

The appointed technicians brought strong practical experience, confidence working across multiple locations, and a clear alignment with the client's values and service standards.

After months of internal recruitment challenges, the client was able to secure the talent needed to support service delivery across their geographical sites.

"We had struggled to recruit for these posts despite multiple attempts. The targeted approach, market knowledge, and quality of shortlisted candidates made the difference. Both appointments have strengthened our team significantly."
